Green Leaf Delegation to Brussels
Ale Yarok’s Ohad Shem-Tov and Boaz Wachtel represented Israel at the Transnational Radical Party’s General Council and the meeting of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
December 6, 2006 the Ale Yarok delegation left Israel for an historic conference in Brussels, Belgium, where Ale Yarok official joined Europe’s Transnational Radical Party and agreed to locally promote Israel’s potential membership in the European Union.
The conference (December 7-9) focused on global peace and on peace in the Middle East specifically. Organized in the European Parliament, the conference was attended by over 30 European Parliament members. One of the major issues and action items discussed at the conference was the campaign to recruit Israel into the European Union as a means to achieve peace in the region. As part of Ale Yarok’s peace advocacy, we welcome the initiative to include Israel in the EU and are happy to cooperate with other parties and organization who share common views and ideologies on issues such as environment, individual freedoms, and human rights and who promote these ideas in public dialogue.
Before leaving Israel, GLP Chairman Ohad Shem-Tov received a briefing at the Israeli Foreign Ministry regarding the official Israeli position on the subject, so that the GLP might be able to responsibly influence future policy.
During the conference, Boaz Wachtel presented the Green Leaf Party’s “Peace Canal” initiative, a peace pipe which will carry water from Turkey to Israel and Syria, thereby solving the regional water scarcity by creating an equal and just distribution of water resources in the Middle East , and raised the idea of potential European assistance in implementing the plan.
GLP Chairman Ohad Shem-Tov “We met European Parliament members and many government ministers and they were enthusiastic about working with us. The Brussels’ conference was the beginning of a potentially extremely fruitful relationship for Israel and the GLP. The Europeans congratulated the GLP for representing Israel well at the conference, yet were surprised by the absence of elected officials. When we received promises from elected European officials to use their strength to promote the Peace Canal within the EU and with Turkey, they also expressed their faith in GLP leaders as future leaders in Israel’s Knesset.”
GLP founder Boaz Wachtel presented on the Turkey/Middle East Peace Canal.
